Super Eagles duo Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu were both in action as Southampton suffered another disappointing Premier League defeat, losing 2-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
Softfootball understands that Aribo started the encounter and made his 10th league appearance of the season before being replaced in the 73rd minute by Ben Brereton Díaz. The midfielder has scored one Premier League goal for the Saints this campaign.
Onuachu was introduced at the same time, replacing Cameron Archer, but the Nigerian striker was unable to inspire a comeback as Southampton slipped to yet another defeat.
Wolves made the perfect start by taking the lead just two minutes into the contest. Matheus Cunha picked out Pablo Sarabia with a perfectly weighted pass, allowing the Spaniard to round goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale before calmly finishing into the empty net.
Southampton responded positively and thought they had found an equaliser through Ryan Manning, but the goal was ruled out following a controversial VAR review.
The visitors’ hopes were dashed early in the second half when Cunha produced a powerful strike to double Wolves’ advantage and secure all three points.
The defeat leaves Southampton still searching for their first away league victory of the season after losing nine of their opening 11 matches. Wolves climbed to 18th place with six points, while the Saints remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table with just four points.
