The decisive moment came in the 85th minute when Adam Armstrong found the back of the net to hand the Saints a crucial victory after a difficult start to the campaign.

Everton believed they had rescued a late point when Beto scored in the 89th minute, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review, ensuring Southampton held on for all three points.

The victory lifts Southampton to 19th place with four points from 10 league matches, moving them off the foot of the table.

Elsewhere, Bournemouth stunned defending champions Manchester City with a 2-1 victory at the Vitality Stadium, handing Pep Guardiola’s side their first Premier League defeat of the season.

Antoine Semenyo gave Bournemouth an early lead in the ninth minute before Evanilson doubled the advantage in the 64th minute. Josko Gvardiol reduced the deficit with eight minutes remaining, but City were unable to find an equaliser.

The result leaves Manchester City second in the standings on 23 points, two behind leaders Liverpool, who came from behind to defeat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 at Anfield.
