Andy Robertson has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur was always his preferred destination after deciding to leave Liverpool, with Roberto De Zerbi playing an important role in convincing him about the club’s project, Softfootball reports.
Robertson explained that Tottenham had been his preferred option since January, provided the club managed to retain their Premier League status. The Scotland international admitted that he became increasingly invested in Spurs’ results as the season progressed.
The left-back revealed that he was watching Tottenham’s matches and hoping they would secure enough points to remain in the top flight. De Zerbi’s arrival further strengthened his belief that the move would be the right decision.
Robertson was particularly impressed by how strongly Tottenham wanted to sign him. The defender had already been linked with Spurs during the January transfer window before eventually completing the move after his Liverpool contract expired.
Tottenham ultimately secured Robertson on a free transfer in the summer, bringing an end to his nine-year spell at Anfield. Liverpool confirmed in June that the Scottish defender had agreed to join Spurs after his contract expired.
Softfootball understands that Tottenham’s persistence was a major factor in Robertson’s decision, with the player also attracted by the opportunity to work under De Zerbi.
The 32-year-old has since begun a new chapter in North London after making 378 appearances and winning eight major trophies during his Liverpool career.
Robertson’s comments underline how seriously he had considered Tottenham even before the eventual agreement was reached, with the club’s survival and De Zerbi’s appointment helping convince him that Spurs offered the right next step.
The move also brought Robertson back to Anfield in September, when he faced his former club for the first time as a Tottenham player.
