The Argentina Football Association (AFA) has offered Lionel Scaloni a new long-term contract that could keep him in charge of the national team until July 2030, Softfootball reports.
According to reports, the federation is prepared to extend Scaloni’s current agreement through the 2028 Copa América, with an option that would take the deal through to the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The proposal would allow Scaloni to oversee another major cycle with Argentina following his hugely successful spell in charge. The final decision, however, remains with the 48-year-old coach, with the green light required from Scaloni before the agreement can be formalised.
Scaloni’s future had appeared uncertain after Argentina’s World Cup final defeat to Spain, with the coach previously suggesting that he could step away from the national team after the tournament. However, the AFA has continued to push for his continuation and has reportedly opened the door for him to remain through the next World Cup cycle.
Softfootball understands that the federation sees continuity as important as Argentina begin a new era following the international retirement of Lionel Messi and the departure of several experienced players.
The proposed extension would give Scaloni the opportunity to oversee the transition toward a younger generation while maintaining the playing identity established during his tenure.
Meanwhile, FIFA has already imposed heavy sanctions following the confrontation between Argentina and Spain after the 2026 World Cup final. Leandro Paredes received a 10-match suspension and a $90,000 fine, while Nahuel Molina was handed a seven-match ban and the same fine. Thiago Almada received a one-match suspension, while assistant coach Roberto Ayala was banned for three matches. Spain’s Gavi was also suspended for one match.
The AFA was additionally fined $321,000 over several disciplinary breaches and ordered to play its next two home matches with a 50% spectator restriction, with part of that sanction suspended under a probationary period.
With Scaloni now considering the federation’s long-term proposal, attention will turn to whether he accepts the opportunity to lead Argentina into the 2030 World Cup.
