Manchester United started planning some time ago for Kobbie Mainoo’s new contract. It will be a key topic again soon as since Carrick arrived, Kobbie feels important, happy to contribute for #MUFC.

With 18 months remaining on his current deal plus an optional extension running to 2028, United are keen to secure the long-term commitment of the academy graduate.

The move comes amid growing optimism inside the club that Mainoo will remain a central figure as United reshape their squad following recent changes behind the scenes.

The appointment of Michael Carrick as interim manager has played a major role in altering Mainoo’s trajectory. Under former boss Ruben Amorim, the 20-year-old found himself largely marginalised, starting just one Premier League match this season.

That situation has changed quickly. Carrick, who worked closely with Mainoo during his youth development years, has shown instant trust in the midfielder.

Mainoo was handed a starting role in the Manchester derby on January 17, 2026, as United claimed a 2-0 victory over City, a decision that drew widespread praise. Michael Carrick later praised Kobbie Mainoo and described him as a prime example of the homegrown talent United must build around moving forward.

During Amorim’s tenure, Mainoo’s reduced role caused visible frustration among supporters. At one point, his brother Jordan even wore a Free Kobbie Mainoo T-shirt at a match, a moment that quickly went viral.

Now, with Amorim dismissed and INEOS taking firmer control of football operations, the club appears to be moving in a different direction. Casemiro’s expected departure at the end of the season will free up significant wage space and highlight the need to rebuild the midfield around younger, more dynamic options.

A contract renewal for Mainoo is now seen as a top priority. While formal negotiations have yet to begin, United have already made initial contact with his representatives. Any new deal is expected to reflect his growing importance, placing him closer to senior squad earners.

The improved atmosphere at Carrington has reportedly left Mainoo very happy, and previous loan discussions, including a potential move to Napoli last summer, have now been quietly shelved.
