The move comes amid growing optimism inside the club that Mainoo will remain a central figure as United reshape their squad following recent changes behind the scenes.
The appointment of Michael Carrick as interim manager has played a major role in altering Mainoo’s trajectory. Under former boss Ruben Amorim, the 20-year-old found himself largely marginalised, starting just one Premier League match this season.
That situation has changed quickly. Carrick, who worked closely with Mainoo during his youth development years, has shown instant trust in the midfielder.
Mainoo was handed a starting role in the Manchester derby on January 17, 2026, as United claimed a 2-0 victory over City, a decision that drew widespread praise.
