Softfootball understands that Divock Origi’s AC Milan story is officially over, and for many, it felt like it ended a long time ago. Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, via this official X account, reported that the club and the Belgian striker mutually agreed to terminate his contract.
He said:
Divock Origi, available as free agent from January as he’s just signed his contract termination at AC Milan. 30 year old striker was out of AC Milan squad and project since summer 2024.
Origi is a free agent and can sign for a new club immediately. It closes the book on one of Milan’s most criticised signings in recent years. When Origi arrived on a free transfer from Liverpool in 2022, expectations were mixed but hopeful.

He came with a reputation, big goals, big nights, and Champions League memories. What followed, though, never really worked. In his debut season, 2022–23, he scored just twice in 27 appearances, against Monza and Sassuolo, and struggled to find any rhythm. Confidence looked low, and trust from coaches didn’t last long either.
Things only went downhill after that. A loan move to Nottingham Forest for the 2023–24 season was supposed to restart his career, but it didn’t. Origi failed to make an impact in the Premier League and returned to Milan in July 2024 with no clear role, no path back, and nothing concrete.

From mid-2024 onwards, Origi was completely frozen out. He didn’t train with the first team, didn’t play, and didn’t even properly join Milan Futuro despite being officially assigned there. Instead, he trained alone, moving between Rome and Florence, staying fit but far away from matchday squads.
Money and tax issues played a big role. Origi was earning around €4 million net per year. Terminating early wasn’t simple. Reports throughout 2025 suggested he wanted around €2 million in severance, roughly half of his remaining salary.

Milan, which recently lost 2-0 to Napoli in the Super Coppa Italiana semi-final, eventually agreed, even if exact figures haven’t been confirmed.
Now a free agent, Origi can finally look ahead to the next chapter. He has not featured in a competitive match for AC Milan since May 2023, despite Milan’s shortage of attacking options and the recent uncertainty over Gimenez’s future.
While this naturally raises concerns about his match sharpness, he is reported to have maintained his fitness by working with a personal trainer.

Interest could come from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, Greece, or even Serie B, where physical forwards still get chances.
His Liverpool legacy, especially those unforgettable 2019 Champions League goals, still gets mentioned. But football doesn’t wait, and neither did Milan. This chapter ends quietly. What comes next is up to Origi now.
