The Aquile were missing key players Danilo Cataldi, Nicolò Rovella, and Samuel Gigot, while AC Milan’s Youssouf Fofana, Santiago Gimenez, and Zachary Athekame didn’t make the trip.

Ardon Jashari returned to the starting lineup for Lazio after fracturing his fibula in August, and Taty Castellanos made his first start since October.

The match got off to a frenetic start, with Strahinja Pavlovic booked in the first 90 seconds. Toma Basic flashed a drive narrowly wide following a Mattia Zaccagni flick, signalling Lazio’s intent early on.

Lazio came close again when Castellanos miscontrolled a chance from a poor Alexis Saelemaekers back-pass into the arms of Mike Maignan.

Just before halftime, Maignan was forced into a reaction save to deny Isaksen’s volley from a deflected corner. Luca Pellegrini also tested the Milan goalkeeper with a floated lob, but the Rossoneri responded through Ruben Loftus-Cheek, whose header went just over the bar.

The second half saw Milan grow more aggressive, with Saelemaekers’ curling effort caught by Christos Mandas and Koni De Winter blocking Tijjani Noslin’s near-post chance from Zaccagni’s cross.

Loftus-Cheek turned another header off target, and Rafael Leao squandered a golden opportunity from eight yards.

The deadlock was finally broken from a Nuno Tavares corner, with Zaccagni peeling away to power a near-post header past Maignan.

Milan pushed hard in stoppage time, but Mandas flew to palm away a Christian Pulisic strike, ensuring Lazio held on for a deserved 1-0 victory.

This win not only avenges their Serie A defeat but also highlights Lazio’s resilience in knockout competitions.

They now advance to the quarter-finals, while AC Milan, who have been in fine form recently following their recent 1-0 victory in the Milan derby against Inter Milan, must regroup quickly as they continue to chase success on multiple fronts.
