We have a demanding match tomorrow, says Xabi Alonso ahead of Elche trip

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso addressed the media with measured confidence as Los Blancos prepare to face an out-of-form Elche on sunday. Madrid remain three points clear at the top of La Liga despite dropping points in their last outing, a 0–0 draw against Rayo Vallecano, and will aim to ensure that result was nothing more than a small blip in an otherwise strong campaign.

Softfootball earlier reported that Madrid will be without key central defender Éder Militão, who suffered an adductor injury while on international duty with Brazil. But Alonso also shared a positive update on Antonio Rüdiger, whose return is now close, offering the champions a defensive boost as they enter a demanding stretch of the season.

With Elche newly promoted but full of intensity, Alonso made it clear that his side expects a tough contest despite their opponent’s struggles. The Real Madrid boss explained how his team is approaching the challenge and the mentality required as the fixture list tightens.

According to an exclusive video link shared on Real Madrid’s official X handle, Alonso opened his media briefing by saying:

All the international players have arrived in good shape, with good energy, a good atmosphere and eager to get back together. We’re going to Elche, who, as a newly promoted team, are playing at a high level, competing and playing good football. We have a demanding match tomorrow.

Before addressing the external noise surrounding the squad, Alonso responded to a question about criticism of the team:

We know where we are, the demands of Real Madrid, and everything that can happen. We take it all in stride, maintaining the high standards we set for ourselves after every match, whether it goes well or badly. We shouldn’t give it more weight than necessary.

Pressed further about the physical condition of his players, Alonso clarified how the club monitors performance beyond injuries:

I don’t link our footballing form with our physical condition. We prepare to be able to compete at the highest level all year round, with all the players we have. Now we’re entering a very demanding phase of the schedule and we need to distribute the workload and playing time well, so that everyone feels ready to play. Physically, the data is improving. We have to live with injuries. Let’s see if we can reduce Militão’s absence. Rüdiger is close to returning. That greatly influences how we distribute playing time.

Turning his attention directly to the upcoming fixture, Alonso spoke about the importance of execution and mentality:

I’ve worked with them for two and a half hours, both on the field and in the discussion, to see what we need, what we are and what we want, where we come from and what lies ahead. We’re preparing mentally and emotionally for what we’re going to need. Tomorrow is the moment to show it. All away matches are demanding.

Finally, Alonso was asked about squad rotation, especially with heavy scheduling ahead:

Everyone who is available and fit, without injury, has the same chance of playing. But in these weeks leading up to the break, we need everyone; everyone will be able to play and have their moment. We have demanding matches, and we need to be fresh both physically and mentally.

As Madrid enter another decisive chapter of the season, Alonso’s composure and clarity reflect a team well aware of its standards and fully committed to maintaining its lead at the top while navigating injuries, fixture congestion, and high expectations.
