Atletico Madrid secured a 3-1 home victory over Union Saint-Gilloise in their Champions League group-stage clash on Tuesday, Softfootball reports. Julian Alvarez, Conor Gallagher, and Marcos Llorente scored as Diego Simeone’s side claimed their second win from four matches, keeping their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage alive.
After a heavy 4-0 defeat to Arsenal in their previous Champions League fixture, Atletico were determined to regain composure. The home side controlled possession early, probing the Union defense with quick wing play while remaining wary of the Belgian side’s counter-attacks.

Union Saint-Gilloise started strongly, threatening with rapid breaks, but Atletico broke the deadlock in the 40th minute. Giuliano Simeone’s run down the right flank created space for Alvarez, whose perfectly timed half-volley beat goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.

The hosts increased their intensity after the break. Gallagher, introduced as a second-half substitute, immediately influenced the game.

He doubled Atletico’s lead in the 72nd minute, reacting swiftly to a loose ball following a counter led by Alexander Sorloth. His energy and link-up play helped Atletico dominate midfield for the remainder of the match.

Union pulled one back in the 81st minute when Ross Sykes rose to meet Sofiane Boufal’s free-kick with a towering header, briefly setting up a tense finish.

Atletico regained composure and sealed the victory in stoppage time, with Llorente scoring from a rebound after a scrambled effort in the box.

The win moves Atletico to six points from four group matches, level with five other sides, while Union remain on three points, facing a challenging path to qualification. Atletico’s display demonstrated resilience and adaptability, a much-needed response after their heavy defeat in London.
