Bayern Munich defeated Augsburg 3-2 in a lively Bavarian derby; the champions clung on despite a nervy late rally from the hosts at the WWK Arena.

The German champions are beginning to make dramatic scenes a common habit after needing a last-minute goal to defeat SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the League Cup last time out.

Serge Gnabry broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark, nodding in Harry Kane’s curling delivery from the left. Luis Díaz, who had earlier missed a golden chance inside 20 seconds, atoned on the stroke of halftime by guiding Konrad Laimer’s low ball into the far corner.

The champions looked out of sight when Michael Olise added a third just after the restart, his shot taking a slight deflection on its way past Finn Dahmen. But Augsburg refused to roll over. Kristijan Jakić pulled one back with a crisp volley, before teenage midfielder Mert Kömür set up a tense finish by squeezing a shot past Manuel Neuer with 15 minutes left.

Softfootball reports that Bayern Munich posted a video of the players celebrating with fans after the game via their official X account.

Only once in Bundesliga history has a team recovered from 3-0 down to beat Bayern, and Sandro Wagner’s side threatened to match that feat as the home crowd roared them forward. Neuer and his defence held firm, though, with Sacha Boey picking up a late booking as Bayern ran down the clock.

It’s another away win in this fixture for Bayern their 11th in 15 league visits to Augsburg (W11, D1, L3). For Wagner, who once wore Bayern colours himself, the positives were clear despite the loss: his side showed fight and flashes of quality, even against the champions.

Bayern stay top with three wins from three and next host Hamburg, a fixture that has produced goals galore in recent years. Augsburg, still searching for consistency, face a run of kinder games to climb away from the bottom half.
