Former Chelsea and Manchester United player Nemanja Matic has agreed to join Serie A side Sassuolo on one year deal after his contract with Lyon was terminated.
The Serbian international already has Serie A experience, having played for AS Roma in the 2023–24 season before moving to French side Rennes. His most recent club was French outfit Lyon, where he made 37 appearances last season, scoring 1 goal and providing 1 assist.

The 37-year-old was as an integral part of the Ligue 1 team last season, but his contract was not renewed amid the club’s financial struggles. Matic was also motivated to leave due to his reduced playing time in European competition
According to renowned transfer guru Fabrizio Romano via his X handle, the legendary Serbian defensive midfielder will become a player for Italian side Sassuolo soon. The reports indicate that Matić will sign a one-year contract as a free agent, with an option to extend for a further season.
Romano’s post reads:
“Nemanja Matić has agreed to join Serie A side Sassuolo on one year deal.
After leaving OL, Matić said yes to Sassuolo proposal as Serie A has always been a concrete idea in his mind.
Deal also includes an option for further season. Here we go“.
If the deal goes through, Matic would return to Serie A just two years after wearing the Roma shirt under Jose Mourinho. During his time at the Roman club, the midfielder made 50 official appearances and left a good impression in the Italian league.
In an eralier post, Softfootball reported that Ipswich Town have sent a formal bid to sign Uruguayan defender, Sebastián Cacere from Club América following Omari Hutchinson departure from Portman Road this summer.
