“Lionel Messi needs rest,” Mascherano admits after a heavy win over New England

Lionel Messi delivered yet another decisive performance for Inter Miami, but manager Javier Mascherano says the Argentine’s growing workload is becoming a concern as the fixtures pile up, Softfootball reports.

The 37-year-old scored twice in a 3-1 victory over the New England Revolution on Wednesday night, completing another full 90 minutes, the ninth straight MLS match in which he has done so.

As reported by Goal.com, Mascherano has now revealed that Messi was originally due for a rest, but plans changed once the hosts scored early. These were his statements;

“Our initial idea was to give Leo a breather,” Mascherano told reporters post-match. “But after New England found the net, the pressure shifted and we decided to keep him on. We’ll need to find the right game to manage his minutes moving forward.”

Inter Miami have now played two of seven matches scheduled in a packed July, returning from the Club World Cup with no time to breathe. Despite the congested run-in, the Herons sit fifth in the Eastern Conference with 35 points from 18 matches, three fewer games than most of their rivals.

Messi has missed just one league game all season, a March fixture against Dallas, and continues to power the Herons’ charge. His brace on Wednesday took his club tally to 54 goals, 20 clear of former teammate Luis Suárez on Inter Miami’s all-time scoring chart.

Mascherano also offered an update on goalkeeper Óscar Ustari, who appeared to be in discomfort late on. The gaffer said it was just a knock.

“It was just a knock. Nothing serious.” “We’ll keep an eye on him.”

Inter Miami hosts second-placed Nashville SC next, in a match that could define their ambitions for the remainder of the campaign.

Contrary to the statement from Macherano that Messi needs time to rest, Softfootball had reported earlier that the Argentine Star wants a bigger challenge elsewhere.

His arrival at Inter Miami was pivotal, leading the club to its first Leagues Cup title in 2023 and topping the Eastern Conference in 2024. His presence also drew former teammates like Luis Suárez and Jordi Alba to the U.S.

Despite the impact, Messi may be considering a return to Europe for a more competitive environment, especially ahead of the 2026 World Cup. According to ESPN Argentina’s Esteban Edul, Messi has paused renewal talks with Inter Miami despite the club’s interest in extending his stay.
