Lionel Messi returned to action for Inter Miami in their Leagues Cup clash against León just days after the death of his father, Jorge Messi, at the age of 68.

The 39-year-old Argentine had travelled to Rosario to attend his father’s funeral before making the quick journey back to the United States to rejoin his teammates.

Softfootball understands that Messi was named among the substitutes for the crucial encounter and entered at halftime to a huge ovation from the Inter Miami supporters. His return came during an extremely emotional period for the Argentine superstar, who had paid tribute to his late father and longtime agent on Instagram.

Despite Messi’s return, Inter Miami were unable to secure progression in the competition, eventually suffering a 3-2 defeat to León and being eliminated from the Leagues Cup.

The emotional circumstances surrounding Messi’s appearance made the night particularly significant. Jorge Messi played a central role throughout his son’s extraordinary career, serving as his agent and helping guide him from his early days in Rosario through his rise to global superstardom.

Messi’s decision to return so quickly after the funeral demonstrated his commitment to Inter Miami, although the circumstances surrounding his comeback were understandably difficult.

For now, Messi has returned to the pitch, but his emotional tribute to his father suggests that the next chapter of his legendary career may be approaching its final stages.
