Rafael Leão has been handed Portugal’s iconic No.7 shirt following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the national team camp, with UEFA’s latest Nations League squad listing showing the AC Milan forward as the new wearer of the number.

The change comes after Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp following developments surrounding his relationship with head coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo, who has worn the famous No.7 shirt throughout much of his international career, remains Portugal’s record goalscorer with 146 goals.

Leão’s promotion to the No.7 shirt marks another significant moment for the Portuguese forward, who is expected to play a bigger role as Portugal continue their Nations League campaign.

Softfootball reports that Portugal had already shown they could cope without Ronaldo during their 2-1 victory over Norway in Oslo on September 27.

João Félix opened the scoring for Portugal in the 17th minute before Erling Haaland restored parity for Norway shortly after half-time. Gonçalo Ramos then struck in the 54th minute to restore Portugal’s advantage and secure all three points.

Diogo Costa also played an important role between the posts, making several saves as Norway pushed for an equaliser. His performance helped Portugal protect their lead and leave Ullevaal Stadium with a crucial Nations League victory.

The result maintained Portugal’s perfect start under Jorge Jesus in the competition, while João Félix was named the public Man of the Match in the match ratings.

With Ronaldo now absent and Leão carrying the No.7 shirt, attention will turn to how Portugal’s next generation responds to the changing leadership within the squad.
