The Netherlands international completed a move to Al Qadsiah in August after just one season at Manchester City, with the transfer fee reported at around €61 million. Reijnders signed a five-year contract with the Saudi Pro League club.
Speaking about his decision, Reijnders made it clear that the financial benefits of the move were impossible to ignore. He explained that although he probably would not have needed to work again after his Manchester City contract, the Al Qadsiah deal gives him the opportunity to secure the financial future of his family for generations.
The 28-year-old was particularly open about wanting to ensure that even his grandchildren would benefit from the wealth generated during his playing career.
Reijnders also revealed that his departure from City was influenced by tactical considerations. He preferred operating as a dynamic midfielder between defence and attack but felt he was increasingly being used in a more advanced role.
Softfootball understands that the financial package was a significant factor in the move, although Reijnders has also pointed to Al Qadsiah’s ambitions and conversations with manager Brendan Rodgers as reasons for accepting the challenge.
Since joining, Reijnders has spoken about helping Al Qadsiah compete for trophies and taking the club to the highest level. The Saudi Pro League officially confirmed his arrival on a five-year deal.
