As Fabio Cannavaro enjoys a return to football’s biggest stage two decades after captaining Italy to World Cup glory, another prominent European coach is preparing for a new chapter in the Middle East.

Portuguese manager Bruno Lage has agreed to become the new head coach of Diriyah Club, marking a significant appointment for the ambitious Saudi side, Softfootball reports.

Founded in 1976, Diriyah recently secured promotion to the Saudi First Division and is regarded as one of the clubs benefiting from the Kingdom’s broader investment in football and major development projects.

Lage arrives with an impressive résumé built across both Portuguese and English football. The 50-year-old guided Benfica to the Primeira Liga title and later managed Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, earning recognition for his attacking philosophy and ability to develop players. His move to Saudi Arabia comes following his departure from Benfica in 2025.

The appointment reflects Diriyah’s determination to accelerate its growth and establish itself as a competitive force within Saudi football. Club officials believe Lage’s European experience and tactical expertise can help drive the next phase of the project.

The move also highlights the continued attraction of Saudi football for established coaches and players. As figures such as Cannavaro make headlines on the international stage, managers like Lage are helping shape the future of club football in a rapidly evolving Saudi sporting landscape.
