José Mourinho has played down the importance of Real Madrid’s decision to sign Rodri, insisting the Spanish midfielder was an addition rather than a necessity for his squad.

Rodri’s signing was NOT a necessity.

The Real Madrid manager explained that his midfield already has plenty of quality and described Rodri as more of an extra addition than someone brought in to solve a weakness.

We don’t have any deficit; it was more like a cherry on top of the cake.🍒

Mourinho highlighted the options already available to him, naming Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde and Bernardo Silva, while also suggesting that Arda Güler could operate in the position.

We have Tchouameni, Camavinga, Valverde, Bernardo, Arda can also end up playing there.

The comments come after Softfootball reported that Mourinho had also ruled out a potential move for Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal.

While praising the young Spanish forward’s quality, Mourinho dismissed the possibility of bringing him to Madrid, pointing towards the strength and depth already available within his Real Madrid squad.

Rodri’s arrival therefore appears to be viewed by Mourinho as an opportunity to add even more quality to an already strong midfield rather than a move made out of necessity.
