Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has warned that Chelsea could be heading for a difficult period if they fail to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
The former England defender believes missing out on a top-four finish would increase pressure on the club’s management, coaching staff, and players after years of rebuilding, Softfootball gathered.
Carragher made the remarks following Chelsea’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Brighton in a Premier League clash. The heavy loss raised fresh concerns about the Blues’ consistency and their ability to compete with the league’s top teams in the race for Champions League qualification.
Speaking after the match, Carragher said Chelsea can no longer rely on the excuse that they are still a long-term project.
He stressed that Chelsea’s ambitious recruitment strategy was designed to return the club to Europe’s elite competition, and failure to achieve that objective would be seen as a major setback. Carragher said:
The project has been talked about for the last couple of years, but Chelsea have to start delivering results.
If they fail to finish in the top four, the fans will become increasingly frustrated because they expect progress after all the money that has been spent.
Chelsea remain in the race for a Champions League place, but they will need a strong finish to the season to avoid further criticism and restore confidence among their supporters.
