Liverpool legend Ian Rush has urged Mohamed Salah to sign a new contract at Anfield, insisting the Egyptian still has every reason to continue his remarkable career with the Reds.
Salah’s future has remained a major talking point with his current deal nearing its expiration, but Rush believes Liverpool supporters would love to see the prolific forward commit his long-term future to the club.
Softfootball understands the Welsh icon reflected on his own departure from Anfield while encouraging Salah to stay.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Rush said:
I’d love him to extend his contract. We don’t know what will happen but I’m sure every Liverpool supporter would love that as well.
Rush explained that his own exit from Liverpool was motivated by a desire for regular playing time rather than a lack of affection for the club; saying:
I left because I wasn’t playing regularly. I just wanted to play football. I didn’t want to sit on the bench and that’s why I went to Leeds United because I wanted to be playing week in, week out.
The former striker believes Salah’s situation is completely different, as the Egyptian remains a key figure in Liverpool’s squad.
But that was my situation. It depends if you are happy sitting on the bench or not. Mo’s not even got to that stage yet, so there’s not really any reason for him to go yet,
Rush added.
