Sporting Lisbon have dismissed head coach Joao Pereira after just eight matches in charge, bringing a swift end to his brief spell as Ruben Amorim’s successor.
The Portuguese champions confirmed Pereira’s departure in a statement on the club’s official X account after a disappointing run of results that saw Sporting surrender top spot in the league.
Softfootball understands the club’s hierarchy decided to act following mounting pressure from supporters and a series of underwhelming performances.
In a brief farewell message, Sporting posted: “

Pereira was promoted from Sporting’s B team after Amorim left to become Manchester United manager, taking his entire backroom staff with him.
However, the former Portugal international managed only three wins in eight games, with Sporting slipping behind rivals Benfica after previously leading the table with an unbeaten record.
The final blow came after a frustrating goalless draw against Gil Vicente, while reports in Portugal suggest club officials were also concerned by tactical mistakes and growing fan unrest.
Meanwhile, Amorim has also endured a difficult start at Manchester United, where his side recently suffered a heavy 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth despite an earlier derby victory over Manchester City.
