Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi has received worrying news from Portugal after his club, Boavista, announced that it is facing severe financial difficulties and could be forced into judicial liquidation if urgent measures are not taken.
Softfootball understands that the Portuguese side confirmed that the Commercial Court of Vila Nova de Gaia has ordered a Special Revitalization Process (PER), a legal procedure aimed at helping financially distressed companies restructure and avoid insolvency.

In its statement, Boavista admitted that the club’s economic and financial situation has deteriorated significantly. The club warned that without strict and exceptional measures, filing for insolvency may become the only remaining option, a scenario that could ultimately lead to liquidation.
Boavista have been dealing with a series of financial problems for several months, including unpaid salaries and bonuses, outstanding debts and restrictions on registering new players.
Onyemaechi initially joined the club on loan in August 2022 before Boavista exercised the option to make the transfer permanent in June 2023. The Nigerian international has since become an important member of the squad and recently earned another call-up to the Super Eagles.
Founded in 1903, Boavista are one of Portugal’s most historic clubs. They have won nine major domestic trophies, including the 2000/01 Primeira Liga title, making them the only club outside Benfica, Porto and Sporting CP to have won the Portuguese championship in the modern era.
The unfolding financial crisis now raises uncertainty about the future of the famous Porto-based club and its players, including Onyemaechi.
