Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has revealed that Ademola Lookman was substituted early in Sunday’s 2-0 Serie A victory over Venezia because the Nigerian forward showed signs of fatigue.

Softfootball gathered that the Atalanta boss decided to replace Lookman with experienced Colombian winger Juan Cuadrado at the start of the second half to preserve his energy and maintain the team’s intensity.

The decision came as a surprise to many supporters, especially with Lookman being one of Atalanta’s most influential attacking players this season.

Speaking after the match, Gasperini explained that the Super Eagles star was not at his usual physical level and admitted there was no need to take unnecessary risks.

The veteran tactician also referenced a similar situation against Como, stressing that managing players’ fitness remains a priority during the demanding campaign.

Lookman has enjoyed another impressive start to the season, scoring two goals in five Serie A appearances while continuing to play a key role in Atalanta’s attack.

The 27-year-old was recently voted Atalanta’s Player of the Month for September, highlighting his growing importance to the Bergamo-based club as they continue their push for domestic and European success.
