Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman has described 2024 as the most memorable year of his professional career following his remarkable achievements with Atalanta and Nigeria.

Softfootball understands that the 26-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough year, highlighted by his historic performance in the UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen.

Lookman scored a sensational hat-trick as Atalanta defeated the Bundesliga champions 3-0 to claim their first-ever European trophy. The achievement also earned him a place among the nominees for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.

Speaking to France Football, Lookman reflected on the success and the emotions that came with it.

“The feeling of winning and having gold around your neck is incomparable,” he said. “Writing history in a small city like Bergamo is extraordinary. When Gasperini told me I had become part of football history, it was a huge honour. But I worked hard to get here.”

The forward also opened up on his decision to represent Nigeria despite winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup with England in 2017.

“I decided with my heart to play for the Super Eagles because I have a close and personal connection with Nigeria,” Lookman explained.

On his Ballon d’Or nomination, he added: “It’s crazy. Being the only African on the list makes it even more special. I’m proud of it and honoured, knowing where I come from.”
