Liverpool FC head coach Arne Slot expressed frustration after his side’s 3–2 defeat to Manchester United on May 3, 2026, blaming costly mistakes and controversial decisions, Softfootball gathered.

United got a double on liverpool as they beat them twice this season, in October 2025 they beat Liverpool 2-1 at anfield under Ruben Amorim.

In his recent interview shared by the clubs Official YouTube channel, Slot described his team’s defensive lapses as “stupid,” insisting it was unnecessary to lose after mounting a strong comeback from 2–0 down to level the match. He was particularly disappointed with how Liverpool failed to manage the game after equalising, allowing the momentum to slip away.

The Dutch manager also questioned VAR decisions, pointing to Benjamin Šeško’s goal, which he believed should have been ruled out for handball, suggesting a recurring pattern of decisions going against his side this season.

He said;

If it was a touch which I think it is, because [the way the ball moved] there must have been a contact is that enough to disallow a goal? I think the rule is if there was a touch it should have been disallowed. But I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone this season that if there is a VAR intervention or if there is something you could look at could be left, could be right then that decision goes against us. That has been, the whole season, every single time the same.

The Dutchman then went further, suggesting the law itself leaves little room for interpretation.

Then we should have a debate in football, is that then enough to disallow a goal? But I think the rule is if there was a touch it should have been disallowed.” The law states that you cannot score a goal with your hand, even if considered accidental.

We have to first look at ourselves, let that be completely clear. But that decisions have gone, every single game, against us, that’s also completely clear.

When we played United in the first game this season I had one of my players [needing] five stitches on the floor, the referee didn’t stop the game and we conceded.

This is a complete pattern over the whole season. But there’s also a pattern that we concede ridiculous goals when we are the better team, when one or two switch off and we concede a goal.

Despite acknowledging United’s sharp first-half performance, Slot highlighted Liverpool’s improvement after the break but lamented their inability to secure at least a point in a crucial match for their Champions League push. The game was ultimately decided by a late winner from Kobbie Mainoo.
