Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernández has revealed that Lionel Messi was close to returning to the club in 2023, but the move was personally blocked by president Joan Laporta.

The revelation challenges the public belief that Messi’s move to Inter Miami was entirely his own decision. Speaking on Romário’s channel, Xavi explained the work done behind the scenes to bring his former teammate back. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano shared the quotes on his official X handle:

Fabrizio Romano reported;

Xavi: “We tried to bring Messi back to Barça in 2023. We talked for 5 months, and everything was ready…

…but in the end the president said no, and the deal collapsed”, told

Xavi explained that he spoke directly with Messi for months, starting in January 2023 after Argentina’s World Cup win. He said the sporting staff and even La Liga had given approval for the move. However, Laporta reportedly stopped the deal, fearing it could create internal problems within the club.

This is not the first time Xavi has spoken about his influence on transfers. He has also said that he personally pushed for the signing of Raphinha, insisting the Brazilian was important for his style of play because of his ability in one-on-one situations and his strong mentality.

As Barcelona looks back at this missed opportunity, attention is now turning to future signings. Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez recently responded to transfer rumours linking him to Barcelona. He denied reports that his family was house-hunting in the city, calling them a “snowball of lies,” and said his focus remains on Atlético.

Softfootball believes that once the club’s financial situation is fully resolved and confirmed by the league, the real reasons behind blocking Messi’s return may become clearer to the fans.

Xavi’s comments have brought fresh attention to how the club handles its legends. With the summer transfer window approaching and Julián Álvarez seen as a possible replacement for Robert Lewandowski, the pressure is on Laporta to show the club can still attract top players.
