Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni has received a six-match ban from UEFA after an investigation into offensive remarks during a Champions League match against Real Madrid. The decision follows an incident in February 2026 involving Vinícius Júnior.
The update was confirmed by Fabrizio Romano on his official X handle:
Fabrizio Romano reported;
OFFICIAL: Gianluca Prestianni has been given a 6 games ban by UEFA, partly suspensional for ‘homophobic insults’.

UEFA ruled that the case involved homophobic conduct, not racial abuse. The ban includes three active matches and three suspended matches over a two-year period. Prestianni has already served one game, so he will miss two more matches.
The situation has created tension at Benfica. Manager José Mourinho had earlier said he would take strong action if the player was found guilty of racism. It is still unclear if the club will change its stance after UEFA’s final decision.
At the same time, Real Madrid are preparing for changes in their squad. Reports say Dani Ceballos could leave the club this summer, with Ajax and Real Betis interested in signing him after limited playing time.
Softfootball believes Benfica may still review the case internally. The club could decide on further action depending on their own rules and standards.

UEFA has asked FIFA to extend the ban worldwide, which could affect Prestianni’s chances of playing for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup. Real Madrid, meanwhile, continue planning their summer moves, with Ceballos expected to leave soon.
