Steven Gerrard has given a brutally honest assessment of Liverpool’s inconsistent season, admitting that Arne Slot’s side have looked like “a very two-faced team” depending on the competition.

Speaking on The Overlap podcast after they shared the clip on their X handle, Gerrard did not hold back as he explained why Liverpool have been so difficult to figure out this season.

Reflecting on what he has seen from the Reds, Gerrard said:

“Well, I’ve really enjoyed watching them in the Champions League, ’cause I think they look a completely different team when they’ve gone into the big Champions League games, and I think they’re in a decent place. They’re… really tough ask of them going into the next one against PSG, but a lot of the games I’ve gone to, I’ve enjoyed watching them.”

But while he praised Liverpool’s European sharpness, Gerrard made it clear that their domestic form has been far less convincing. He said:

“In the league, look very different. I haven’t really enjoyed watching them. Look as if they’ve got a lot of issues to fix. I’ve covered some of the games as well for TNT and after the game… it’s been difficult to sort of put your finger on one issue that they’ve got, ’cause they’ve got quite a few and it’s all over the pitch.”

Gerrard then delivered the line that perhaps sums up Liverpool’s campaign better than anything else, saying:

“So, they’ve been very mixed and looked very two-faced, I’d say, as a team this season.”

His comments will likely resonate with many Liverpool fans, especially in a season where the team has shown real quality on the big European nights, yet too often looked uncertain and unconvincing in league matches.

That contrast seems to be what frustrates Gerrard the most the sense that this squad clearly has the level, but has not found the consistency needed to truly dominate.

Softfootball reported that Gerrard has also been outspoken on other major football talking points lately, from questioning Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave for Madrid to reflecting on why England’s so-called golden generation fell short. But this latest verdict on Liverpool may hit closest to home for Reds supporters, because it comes from someone who not only understands the standards at Anfield, but helped define them.
