Liverpool’s football structure is set for a major shake-up after Michael Edwards stepped down from his role as Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of Football.
Edwards has informed FSG of his decision to leave, with Mike Gordon now set to take control of the group’s football operations.
Softfootball understands Edwards first notified FSG of his intention to depart last autumn after it became apparent the ownership group would not expand its multi-club football portfolio. Despite that decision, he remained in his position to support sporting director Richard Hughes during the transition.
This comes after Liverpool’s hopes of signing highly rated winger Yan Diomandé have taken a significant hit after reports revealed the 19-year-old has chosen Paris Saint-Germain as his preferred destination should he leave RB Leipzig this summer.

The highly respected executive had returned to FSG with the expectation of leading the acquisition of another football club rather than overseeing recruitment. Bordeaux and Getafe were both explored as potential investments, but once plans to purchase the Spanish side stalled, Edwards’ departure became increasingly inevitable.
Sources indicate the position ultimately evolved into something very different from the role originally presented to him.
One of football’s most respected sporting executives, Edwards is now expected to attract significant interest from leading clubs and ownership groups, with a lengthy spell away from the game considered unlikely.
