Many analysts have not blamed poor management during the time of Enzo Maresca, who was in charge before being dismissed in early 2026. Under Maresca, Reece James was carefully managed, which allowed him to stay fit, sign a contract, and feature consistently during the 2025/26 season.

However, concerns have emerged following recent matches. In Chelsea’s 5–2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, James played the full 90 minutes in a high-intensity encounter. He then followed it up with another full 90 minutes in midfield during the 1–0 loss to Newcastle United.

Softfootball questions whether this level of usage was necessary, especially considering James’ injury history. Observations suggest that under Maresca, he may not have been used in such demanding consecutive fixtures without rotation.

Attention has now turned to Liam Rosenior, who has overseen these recent decisions. Notably, during the Newcastle match, Moisés Caicedo was substituted instead of Reece James, raising further concerns, as James has traditionally been the player managed carefully in such situations.

Historically, James has often been substituted not due to poor performance but as a preventive measure against injury. This approach appears to have shifted, and it may have contributed to his current setback.

The injury is expected to sideline him for several weeks and could potentially impact his chances of selection for England national football team ahead of upcoming international competitions, including the World Cup.
