One notable aspect of football fandom is the ability to adjust expectations as the season progresses, often based on a team’s performance and position.

At the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season, many pundits predicted Arsenal as title contenders, a view some Liverpool fans initially rejected. However, as the season has developed, those same Liverpool supporters are now focused on securing Champions League qualification rather than competing for the title.

Similarly, Manchester United fans appear to have shifted their expectations. With the title now out of reach, their primary objective has become finishing in the top four, which is now seen as a successful outcome for the season.

Chelsea fans are also in a comparable position, with their focus now firmly on qualifying for the Champions League rather than competing for major honours. This trend highlights how fan ambitions evolve throughout a campaign, shaped by results and league standings.

Softfootball recalls a similar situation during Xavi Hernandez’s early period at Barcelona, when the club was struggling in mid-table positions. At that time, the main objective for fans was simply to secure a top-four finish.

In contrast, Barcelona’s strong performances this season have shifted expectations significantly, with supporters now aiming for major trophies, particularly La Liga and the Champions League.
