Switzerland and Algeria face off at BC Place in Vancouver on Friday with a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16 at stake. The Swiss topped Group B with seven points, while Algeria progressed as one of the best third-placed teams after finishing third in Group J with four points.

Murat Yakin’s side impressed throughout the group stage, ending ahead of co-hosts Canada after a decisive 2-1 victory in their final group fixture.

Algeria secured a historic return to the knockout rounds after a dramatic 3-3 draw against Austria in their final group game. The Desert Warriors are appearing in the World Cup knockout stage for only the second time, having previously reached the last 16 in 2014 before falling to eventual champions Germany.

Vladimir Petkovic’s men have shown resilience throughout the tournament despite suffering a heavy defeat to Argentina earlier in the competition.

History favours the Swiss, with Algeria losing both previous meetings between the nations. However, knockout football often produces surprises, and both sides know victory would set up a quarter-final pathway that avoids facing a FIFA top-10 nation until the last eight.

Team News

Switzerland have only one fitness concern, with Silvan Widmer battling a hip issue. Luca Jaquez could start at right-back, while Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji and Breel Embolo are all expected to feature.

Algeria are sweating over the fitness of Mohamed Amoura, who remains a major doubt. Riyad Mahrez, Amine Gouiri and Ibrahim Maza are expected to lead the attack, while Nabil Bentaleb anchors midfield in front of Aissa Mandi and Ramy Bensebaini.

Possible Lineups

Switzerland possible starting lineup:

Algeria possible starting lineup:
