Former Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr believes Eric Chelle’s experience and knowledge of African football could prove valuable to Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles have been drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Tanzania and Uganda as they prepare to challenge for a record-extending fourth AFCON title.
Rohr, who currently serves as technical adviser to the Benin Republic national team, believes Chelle’s previous experience with Mali will help him understand the demands of leading Nigeria at the continental tournament.
Speaking to Brila FM, Rohr said he hopes the new Super Eagles boss can instil confidence in the players, although he jokingly added that he does not want Chelle’s influence to work against Benin.
I wish all the best to the Super Eagles and Eric Chelle. I knew him; he was a good player,
Rohr said.
Then he started to coach in France with a mid-table team, and later he had the chance to manage Mali, a very good team.
The experience will come, and I hope he will give confidence to the players but not against Benin.”
Softfootball reports that Chelle was appointed Nigeria head coach after previously guiding Mali, where he gained valuable experience managing at the international level.
The Super Eagles will be hoping that his knowledge of African football can help them navigate a challenging group and mount a strong challenge for the AFCON trophy.
