Real Madrid v Borussia Dortmund: Alonso hope to change record against Dortmund in last 8 fixture

New Real Madrid manager, Xabi Alonso will be looking to better his head-to-head record against Borussia Dortmund when his La Casa Blanca team file out against the Yellow and Black in the quarter finals of the ongoing 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

Madrid and Dortmund clash in a supposed thrilling encounter after knocking out Juventus and Monterrey respectively. For Alonso, this is more than an encounter as he will be going into this with the mindset to bag another win against Dortmund.

The former Bayer Leverkusen manager did not have such a high ratio of win against Dortmund during his Bundesliga days despite winning the Bundesliga title and German Cup. Alonso faced the men in yellow-and-black 5 different times and could only manage one win and two draws while losing on two occasions. Although as a player in the Bundesliga, he enjoyed more success rate with seven wins, two draws and two defeats in 11 matches.

Back as Real Madrid player, he suffered defeat thrice and only managed two wins and as a coach of the side now, he will be hungry to begin his Madrid coach stint with 100% record. Interestingly, both Madrid and Dortmund have similar record at this Club World Cup with both drawing their first games and winning the last 3.

Although Real Madrid, who are record FIFA Club World Cup winners with 5 trophies, have a good record as a team against Dortmund. The Los Blancos are yet to lose to Dortmund in 6 matches including last season’s 5-2 win in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League and  a a 2-0 win at Wembley Stadium in the 2024 UEFA Champions League finals.

Madrid, who won no trophy last season, are searching for a 6th FIFA Club World Cup trophy and the very first trophy under the new manager, Xabi Alonso. If they achieve this feat they will be the first team to win the restructured Club World Cup format.

It’s been a long time coming, but we finally have a blockbuster fixture at the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-finals. Unlike the previous matches—either straightforward wins or shocking upsets—the clash between PSG and Bayern Munich promises unpredictability, fireworks, and global attention.

While PSG might be slight favourites, they can’t be called runaway leaders. Bayern Munich have slowly but surely clawed their way back among Europe’s elite. This is a matchup between the current European champions and a side that has won the Club World Cup twice—each with a rich pedigree and serious firepower.
