Softfootball understands that Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has signed a new contract with the club, extending his stay until June 2027.

The 33-year-old’s previous deal was due to expire in 2026, but the club opted to offer a two-year extension on improved terms. As first reported by The Athletic, the deal marks a departure from Real Madrid’s usual policy of offering one-year extensions to players over the age of 30.

Courtois has now become the second player to extend his contract with Madrid this summer, following defender Raul Asensio, who signed a new deal through to 2031.

Courtois, who joined Madrid in 2018 from Chelsea, has since made 288 appearances for the Spanish giants, keeping 113 clean sheets. During that time, he has won three La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies.

The Belgian international missed most of the 2023-24 season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury last August. He returned to full fitness in time to start Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the 2024 Champions League final.

Despite criticism for a costly mistake in the Copa del Rey final loss to Barcelona, Courtois earned praise for his performances in the latter stages of the season, particularly during Madrid’s run in the Champions League, and Softfootball’s earlier report of the Club World Cup’s semifinal heavy 4-0 loss to PSG.

Speaking after a Club World Cup quarterfinal game against Dortmund, Madrid manager Xabi Alonso praised the Belgian goalkeeper, who also hinted that Courtois will stay longer at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“We are so lucky to have Thibaut in goal. He is one of those keepers who makes you win games. He’s been decisive and remains a great influence on this team.”

Real Madrid begins their new La Liga season next month, on 19th August, against Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabeu. Although there have been pleas from the Madrid board for an extension to relax from the just concluded Club World Cup.
