Real Madrid Eye Rodri as Midfield Reinforcement in 2026 Amid City Contract Uncertainty

Real Madrid have already made four signings this summer, but the club’s transfer activity may not be over just yet. With the defensive midfield position identified as a weak link last season, Los Blancos are looking to bolster their options in that area ahead of Xabi Alonso’s first campaign in charge.

Despite having Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Dani Ceballos as natural options in the pivot role, their inconsistent form over the past year has left the club eager to bring in a world-class addition. And Softfootball understands that the dream target is Manchester City’s Rodri Hernandez.

Real Madrid are closely monitoring Rodri’s situation and would be keen to make a move if the opportunity arises, particularly if he doesn’t extend his contract with City. Spanish outlet Diario AS further confirmed the interest via their official X account, stating:

“Real Madrid keeping an eye on Rodrigo.”

“After spending €178 million on Huijsen, Trent, Carreras, and Mastantuono, signing a central midfielder is the next big objective for Real Madrid.”

Rodri, who recently returned to action at the Club World Cup after a long spell on the sidelines with an ACL injury, has reportedly impressed Madrid officials. They are expected to scout him again once the Premier League resumes, with a potential move lined up for the summer of 2026.

However, there are financial concerns. City are unlikely to part with the 29-year-old for anything under €100 million, a fee Real Madrid are unwilling to pay unless Rodri enters the final year of his contract. If his deal is not renewed before next summer, the Spanish midfielder could represent a more affordable market opportunity.

Rodri is not the only name on Madrid’s shortlist. Should a deal for the City star prove unattainable, the club could pivot to other top-tier midfielders, including Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella, Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, or Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister all of whom remain under consideration as alternatives.

Interestingly, Real Madrid have shown restraint in recent negotiations even pausing talks with Vinicius Junior over his high wage demands. While the club is interested in high-profile additions, they remain committed to maintaining a sustainable wage structure under president Florentino Pérez’s stewardship.

As it stands, Rodri remains the preferred candidate, but Real Madrid are in no rush. With 2026 circled on the calendar, all eyes will be on the Spanish midfielder’s contract talks in Manchester.
