The Premier League has explained why Kai Havertz’s late goal for Arsenal against Aston Villa was disallowed during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium.
Havertz appeared to have scored Arsenal’s third goal in the 87th minute after Mikel Merino’s effort deflected off him and found the net.
However, the goal was overturned following a VAR review, with officials ruling that the ball had struck Havertz’s arm immediately before crossing the line.
Softfootball reports that Arsenal were forced to settle for a point after surrendering a two-goal lead against Unai Emery’s side.
The Premier League Match Centre explained the decision, stating that the VAR review identified a handball in the build-up to the goal and recommended that it be disallowed.
Arsenal had taken control of the game through goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Havertz before Aston Villa fought back.
Youri Tielemans reduced the deficit before Ollie Watkins equalised, denying Mikel Arteta’s side another important victory in the title race.
The result prevented Arsenal from closing the gap on league leaders Liverpool to four points.
