Lionel Scaloni has delivered a strong endorsement of Cristian “Cuti” Romero, insisting that the Argentina captain is among the best centre-backs in world football when he is fully fit.
Speaking ahead of Argentina’s latest international fixture, Scaloni said:
When Cuti Romero is fit, he’s among the best centre-backs in the world.
He added:
He is right up there as one of the best centre-backs in the world. Zero doubts.
Softfootball reports that Romero’s importance to the national team has increased following Lionel Messi’s departure from international football. Scaloni has confirmed that the Tottenham defender has taken over as Argentina’s captain, with Emiliano Martínez and Lautaro Martínez next in the leadership order.

Romero also recently scored in Argentina’s 4-0 victory over Bolivia, marking his first appearance as captain in the post-Messi era.
Meanwhile, Argentina are working on extending Scaloni’s contract as the coach considers continuing into another World Cup cycle. Reports from Argentina say the AFA wants to reach an agreement that would keep him in charge through the 2030 World Cup.
La Nación reported on September 30 that negotiations between Scaloni and AFA president Claudio Tapia were progressing, with both sides discussing a continuation beyond his current contract, which expires at the end of 2026.
The AFA had also formally presented Scaloni with a renewal proposal that includes an option running through the 2030 World Cup, according to Goal.
With Romero now leading the team and Scaloni discussing a potential continuation, Argentina are beginning to shape the next chapter of the national team after the Messi era.
