Newcastle United are closing in on a deal to sign Southampton goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale. The transfer structured as an initial loan with an option to buy is set to benefit Arsenal through a sell-on clause included in the 27-year-old’s £25 million move to the Saints last summer.
The England international joined Southampton from Arsenal in August 2024, made 32 appearances last season but could not prevent the Saints’ relegation from the Premier League.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, he shared on his X handle that the 27-year-old England international has already agreed to the move, while also revealing that an agreement in expected to be reached with Southampton in the coming days.
The tweet reads:
“Aaron Ramsdale already said yes to Newcastle and official bid has been sent to Southampton.
“High loan fee, salary covered and buy option clause. Southampton open to accepting but want higher fee.
“Deal expected to happen”.
It seemed inevitable that Ramsdale was likely to be sold by Southampton this summer, given that the English international tops the highest-paid Championship players list, and Ramsdale’s intent to keep his Three Lions hopes alive by continuing in the top flight.
Sources indicate to Softfootball that Rangers and Galatasaray registered interest in Ramsdale last month for a loan move, with Bournemouth and Newcastle also monitoring his situation. Now, it appears that the Magpies have won the race to sign the Saints shot-stopper.
Ramsdale’s departure will leave the Saints still either searching for a new number one at Southampton or placing his trust in number two Gavin Bazunu for the 2025/26 Championship season, which history would indicate could be a risky move.
Stoke City goalkeeper Viktor Johansson would be an option for Southampton to fill the void left by Ramsdale’s imminent move to Newcastle United, which has left the Saints with another headache this summer.
