Newcastle United are preparing to submit an opening official bid for SC Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi after establishing initial contact with the Bundesliga club.

The 20-year-old Swiss international has emerged as one of the brightest young talents at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, attracting interest with his impressive performances for Switzerland. Manzambi has registered three goals and two assists during the tournament, playing a key role in his country’s run to the round of 16.

Softfootball understands that the midfielder’s composure, creativity, and professionalism have caught the attention of Newcastle’s recruitment team. His contributions helped Switzerland secure a convincing 2-0 victory over Algeria in Vancouver, sealing their place in the knockout stages for the first time in 88 years.

Born in Geneva, Manzambi joined Freiburg from Servette in 2023 and has continued his rapid development in Germany. Since arriving at the Bundesliga club, he has made 38 league appearances, scoring seven goals while establishing himself as a versatile attacking midfielder capable of operating in several advanced roles.

Newcastle view Manzambi as a player with significant long-term potential and are keen to strengthen their midfield with young, high-quality talent. The Magpies are expected to formalise their interest in the coming days as they look to secure one of the breakout stars of the World Cup.

Should a deal materialise, Manzambi would become another exciting addition to Newcastle’s ambitious project for the future.
