Virgil van Dijk has admitted that Liverpool’s season has taken a serious mental toll on the squad, with the Reds captain making it clear that the team now has no room left for excuses as they enter a defining stretch of the campaign.

As Softfootball reported, Van Dijk’s latest comments reflect both the emotional weight of Liverpool’s inconsistent season and the urgency now hanging over their final fixtures.

Speaking in comments shared by Fabrizio Romano via their x handle, the Dutch defender did not try to hide how difficult the season has been behind the scenes.

Romano reported;

Virgil van Dijk: “Mentally it has been a very tough season overall”.

“But we have a responsibility, not only to ourselves but especially to the fans and, if we want to make something out of this season, we have to try and do something special in the next three games”.

That line alone says a lot about where Liverpool currently are. For a team that began the campaign with major expectations, the reality has been far more frustrating, with missed opportunities, inconsistent performances, and growing pressure around key players.

Still, Van Dijk made it clear that the squad cannot afford to dwell on what has already gone wrong. He stressed that the responsibility now is to finish strongly, not just for themselves but for the supporters who have stayed behind them through a difficult run.

In his words,

“But we have a responsibility, not only to ourselves but especially to the fans and, if we want to make something out of this season, we have to try and do something special in the next three games.”

That sense of frustration has also shown up in Liverpool’s recent performances. In another reflection on the team’s struggles, Van Dijk recently pointed to their lack of cutting edge in attack, suggesting they simply did not create enough danger in a disappointing outing against Leeds.

That concern ties directly into one of the club’s biggest ongoing talking points  Mohamed Salah’s role and form. But even amid the noise, Van Dijk has remained publicly supportive of the Egyptian, standing by him during recent selection debates and making it clear that the squad still trusts his importance.

At this stage, Liverpool’s season is hanging on what they do next. And from Van Dijk’s words, the message is simple: the pain of this season will mean nothing unless they respond now.
