Former Real Madrid left-back Marcelo has revealed how Jose Mourinho played a significant role in improving his defensive abilities and teaching him to become a more aggressive player on the pitch.
Mourinho was Real Madrid manager between 2010 and 2013, during which Marcelo developed into one of the club’s most important players and established himself as a key figure in the team.
The Brazilian defender was known primarily for his attacking qualities, technical ability and creativity from the left side, but he credits Mourinho with helping him become more disciplined and effective defensively.
Speaking to El Hormiguero, Marcelo reflected on the impact the Portuguese manager had on his development and explained how Mourinho encouraged him to change his approach to the game. Marcelo said:
Mourinho taught me to be more aggressive. I always wanted to have the ball, but he taught me that I had to steal the ball first. He helped me a lot.
The former Brazil international also recalled a message Mourinho gave him early in their time together, challenging him to improve the defensive side of his game.
He told me: ‘You don’t know how to defend. I’m going to teach you, and I’m going to make you the best.’ It’s nice.
Marcelo went on to become a key member of Mourinho’s Real Madrid side, helping the club win the Copa del Rey in 2011 and the La Liga title in 2012.
The Brazilian later enjoyed an extraordinary career at the Santiago Bernabéu, winning multiple domestic and European trophies and becoming one of the most decorated players in the club’s history.
His comments highlight the influence Mourinho had on his development, particularly in helping him balance his natural attacking instincts with greater defensive responsibility.
