Manchester United has announced plans to cut up to 200 jobs as part of a broader transformation plan aimed at returning the club to profitability.
Chief executive Omar Berrada informed staff that the redundancies are necessary after five consecutive years of financial losses, Softfootball gathered.
This move follows an earlier round of cuts last year which saw 250 roles eliminated. The club stated that approximately 150 to 200 positions may be affected, subject to a consultation process expected to last three to four months.
With a total workforce of 1,140 employees as of June 2024, these latest cuts would mean nearly 40 percent of staff have been let go in two waves.
The decision comes amid significant financial pressure, with the club reporting a £27.7 million loss in the second quarter and over £300 million in losses across the past three years. Berrada emphasized that stabilizing the finances is crucial for future success. He said:
We have lost money for the past five consecutive years. This cannot continue. Our two main priorities as a club are delivering success on the pitch for our fans and improving our facilities. We cannot invest in these objectives if we are continuously losing money.
On the field, the team struggles continue under Ruben Amorim, with United sitting 15th in the Premier League. The club insists these hard choices will create a solid financial platform for investing in both men’s and women’s football infrastructure.
