Middlesbrough are closing in on a loan move for Manchester City youngster Sverre Nypan. The 18-year-old midfielder joined the Citizens in a £12.5 million deal from Rosenborg.
Man City confirmed Nypan’s arrival last month after they fended off rival interest from a number of clubs, including Arsenal and Aston Villa. The Norwegian put pen to paper on a five-year contract after the Sky Blues agreed a reported £12.5m deal with Rosenborg.

Softfootball understood that Boro also scouted Nypan last season but, given the high profile interest from the Premier League and major European clubs, realised it wasn’t going to be possible to sign the midfielder.
However, when it emerged Nypan was going to City, Boro took advantage of their healthy relationship with the Premier League club and enquired about a loan move. And City felt it was the ideal next step for Nypan.
Pep Guardiola’s team are currently well stocked in central midfield, with the Spanish coach able to call upon Tijjani Reijnders, Nico Gonzalez, Mateo Kovacic and Ilkay Gundogan. As a result, the Citizens are set to send Nypan out on loan to gain regular playing time in his first season in English football.
Now, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano via his X handle, Manchester City are on the verge of agreeing a deal with Championship side Middlesbrough.
The update claims that the two clubs are working on ironing out the final details for Nypan to join Boro on a season-long loan deal, and the highly-rated Norwegian is understood to be ‘happy’ to continue his development at the Riverside Stadium. His tweet reads:
“EXCLUSIVE: Middlesbrough are closing in on Sverre Nypan loan deal from Manchester City!
Agreement almost reached with details set to be sorted for Norwegian talent. 🇳🇴
Nypan, happy to join Boro as #MCFC wanted loan in England for their talent.
Here we go, soon”.
Nypan would benefit from working with Guardiola and top quality players at Man City on a day-to-day basis, but it would make little sense for him to waste a season on the fringes of the first-team squad.
A move to the Championship will ease Nypan into the demands of English football, even if the second-tier offers its own challenges. The loan move offers Sverre Nypan the opportunity to become an important player in a team that will be looking to mount a promotion push this season.
In a related post, Softfootball reported earlier that Manchester City is closely monitoring Real Madrid forward Rodrygo as a potential high profile addition to their squad as Guardiola is admiring the Brazilian, hence actively pushing for the option to be explored should Savinho leave the Etihad this summer.
