Manchester City tell Ortega, 32, to leave this summer after Trafford’s arrival

Having unveiled James Trafford as their new goalkeeper, Manchester City are now ready to let go one of their goalkeepers this summer. Softfootball had revealed how City managed to convince Burnley to sell Trafford in a lower price than his original release clause.

With Trafford’s arrival, City now have 4 goalkeepers in their arsenal – Ederson, Stefan Ortega and newly bought former Chelsea goalkeeper, Marcus Bettinelli. Bettinelli was bought to replace Scott Carson who exited the club in June.

Until recently when the news of Ederson wanting to leave started spreading, City were not in pursuit of a goalkeeper. Softfootball had reported that Galatasaray were monitoring Ederson’s situation at City and might table an offer for the Brazilian if he gives green light to a move.

Ortega had been City’s second choice since joining the club 3 years ago and only gets to play when Ederson is injured or in the League Cup ties. Ortega had joined City in 2022 from Arminia Bielefled where he had been for 5 years in his second stint with the club.

Arminia Bielefled was the same club, Ortega started his career at local clubs in his town before joining Arminia Bielefled at the youth stage. He spent seven years at Bielefled playing for both youth team and senior team. He later joined 1860 Munich between 2014 and 2017 before returning to Bielefled again in 2017.

According to top transfer journalist, Fabrizio Romano, he shared in a post on his verified X handle, that Manchester City are ready to let Ortega go.

He posted:

“Manchester City have informed Stefan Ortega that he can leave the club this summer following Trafford’s arrival.”

Ortega has won 2 Premier League titles, the FA Cup, FA Community Shield, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup with city.

The German goalkeeper will be fondly remembered for his last minute save against Tottenham Hotspurs that saw helped City win the 2024 Premier League title.
