Manchester United’s signing of Bryan Mbeumo is making headlines, but it’s their crosstown rivals, Manchester City who are unexpectedly set to benefit financially from the blockbuster transfer.
According to a post by Get French Football News on their X handle, City football group, the parent company that owns Manchester City will receive around €9 million from United’s big-money move for the former Brentford winger.
They wrote:
“City Group-owned Troyes will earn €9m from Bryan Mbeumo’s move to Manchester United. (EE).”
While the deal doesn’t involve City directly, the financial ripple effect is being felt thanks to CFG’s vast multi-club model.

Softfootball understands that the surprise windfall stems from City football group’s previous involvement in Mbeumo’s career pathway, likely tied to a sell on clause or strategic investment through one of their affiliated clubs.
Mbeumo, a product of Troyes’ academy system spent several years progressing through the ranks in France before making a move to England with Brentford in 2019. At the time, Troyes successfully negotiated key clauses into his transfer, decisions which have now paid off in significant fashion.
It is detailed that the Ligue 2 side are set to receive €7.4 million from a sell-on clause negotiated into the player’s contract when he was first sold to Brentford in 2019 for €6.6 million, which also included a €1 million bonus linked to Premier League promotion.
Troyes are also reportedly set to earn a further €2 million in training compensation and solidarity payments as a result of Manchester United’s mammoth investment in the Frenchman.
Despite now being a Ligue 2 side, Troyes’ contribution to Mbeumo’s early development has enabled them to benefit heavily from the record-breaking deal between Brentford and Manchester United.
As Manchester United unveiled Mbeumo as their latest high profile addition, the news that their noisy neighbours are cashing in has added an extra twist to the transfer.
While United fans will be focused on what Mbeumo can bring to Reuben Amorim’s attack, City’s hierarchy will quietly be celebrating a profitable piece of business without lifting a finger.
