Former Republic of Ireland star Roy Keane has urged the Football Association to make an ambitious move for Pep Guardiola as England’s next permanent manager.

Softfootball added that Keane believes England should target the very best coach available if they are serious about building on recent progress under Gareth Southgate. With Lee Carsley reportedly not interested in taking the role permanently, the former Manchester United captain feels Guardiola should be the FA’s top priority.

Keane made the comments while working as a pundit during England’s UEFA Nations League victory over Finland on Sunday.

When asked who should succeed Gareth Southgate on a permanent basis, Keane did not hesitate to name the Manchester City boss.

“Go after Pep (Guardiola), go for the best,” Keane said on ITV.

“Pep’s contract is up in the summer.

“The FA have to go for the best guy, I don’t know if finances will play a part in it.

“If Lee obviously rules himself out, and he’s not interested, and that seems to be the noises coming out, then the FA better get busy and get the right man.
