Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has resigned from his position following the national team’s stunning elimination in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing his tenure to an unexpected end.
According to reports reaching Softfootball, the decision came after the German Football Association (DFB) held an emergency meeting lasting more than three and a half hours to assess Germany’s disappointing campaign.
The discussions reportedly concluded with DFB officials strongly advising Nagelsmann to step down after Germany suffered a dramatic 3-4 penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay, a result that ended their hopes of challenging for a fifth World Cup title far earlier than expected.
In an official statement released around 16 hours after the heartbreaking defeat, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf acknowledged the magnitude of the setback.

After such a devastating setback, and considering the challenges ahead, we cannot and will not simply return to business as usual.
Neuendorf said.
Nagelsmann’s departure marks a dramatic conclusion to a reign that began with high expectations. Germany entered the tournament among the favourites after an impressive group-stage campaign, but their title ambitions were abruptly ended by Paraguay in one of the biggest upsets of the competition.
