Softfootball can reveal that former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has moved to the EPL, the league he left two years ago.

According to The Athletic, Brentford have confirmed the signing of former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson on a free transfer, with the experienced midfielder penning a two-year contract at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Henderson, 35, becomes the first signing under new head coach Keith Andrews following the departure of Thomas Frank to Tottenham. The former England international arrives as a direct replacement for Christian Nørgaard, who recently joined Arsenal in a £10m deal.

Speaking on the club’s latest addition, Andrews said:

“Once we learned of Jordan’s availability, the decision was straightforward. He remains in outstanding physical condition and is still incredibly driven.

“Jordan is one of the most influential leaders the Premier League has seen. He’s lifted major trophies, played at the top level internationally, and sets the kind of professional example we want at Brentford.”

“His experience and leadership will raise the standards in our dressing room. He’s a perfect fit for where we want to go as a club.”

Henderson returns to the Premier League after spells with Saudi side Al Ettifaq and Dutch club Ajax. The midfielder featured 57 times for Ajax last season following a brief six-month stint in Saudi Arabia.

During his decorated 12-year spell at Liverpool, Henderson made 492 appearances, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup, and captaining the club throughout their most successful modern era.

Now back in England, Henderson is pushing to be part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans for the 2026 World Cup, having been included in both of the German’s squads since he took charge of the Three Lions earlier this year.

Brentford finished 10th in the Premier League last season and continues to reshape its squad ahead of the new campaign. Forward Bryan Mbeumo remains a key target for Manchester United, with the player reportedly keen on a move to Old Trafford pending agreement between the clubs.

Recall that Softfootball had earlier reported that Henderson turned down the offer to join Liverpool despite an approach from the Reds.

The deal was meant to be completed last week, with final medical checks and paperwork scheduled for last weekend, and an official announcement delayed until this week out of respect for Diogo Jota and his family following the tragic passing of the ex-Liverpool forward.

The presence of Henderson will, however, complement the departure of Christian Nørgaard, who joined Arsenal last week.
