Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted his side are no longer realistic contenders for either the Premier League or UEFA Champions League this season following their disappointing run of results.
The reigning English champions have struggled to maintain the consistency that has defined Guardiola’s tenure, slipping behind their title rivals after a series of poor performances.
Softfootball can confirm the City boss made the honest assessment during an interview with TNT Sports when asked about his team’s chances of competing for major honors.
Responding to questions about City’s title ambitions, Guardiola said:
No. We don’t have the players. It’s more difficult. I don’t have the feeling now. Maybe it’s going to happen, who knows?
The Spaniard admitted the lack of consistency has been the biggest concern for his side this season, insisting that maintaining high standards over an entire campaign is essential for winning major trophies.
When you want to achieve something important, like win the Premier League or reach the latter stages of the Champions League, you need consistency. We had that for many years, but now we are not consistent,
Guardiola added.
