Fulham have thrown their full support behind Calvin Bassey after the defender was subjected to racist and homophobic abuse on social media following Sunday’s FA Cup victory over Manchester United.
The Super Eagles star scored Fulham’s opening goal and completed the full 120 minutes as the London club progressed to the quarter-finals with a 4-3 penalty shootout win after a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
Following the match, Bassey shared screenshots of abusive messages he received online, many of which contained racist and homophobic remarks. Softfootball understands the incident sparked widespread condemnation across the football community.
In a strongly worded statement, Fulham described the abuse as “utterly appalling” and reaffirmed their unwavering support for the Nigerian international. The club said:
We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour, which has no place in football or society.
Fulham also confirmed they would work closely with the relevant authorities to identify those responsible and ensure appropriate action is taken.
The Premier League club reiterated its commitment to fighting all forms of discrimination, stressing that football must remain a place of respect, equality and inclusion for everyone involved in the game.
